2023 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Published

20 1

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

If anyone deserved an Emmy for their acceptance speech alone, it would be recent Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series winner Sheryl Lee Ralph (technically last year’s telecast falls into this year’s eligibility window, so why not throw her another recognition?).

One of the appeals of her show “Abbott Elementary” is just how giving the ABC comedy is to its ensemble, so though Ralph is the frontrunner, co-star Janelle James (another returning nominee) could just as fittingly win for her standout performance as Principal Ava in Season 2. Plus, with shows like “Hacks” out of the running this year, there is more room for “Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter to make it in too this time.

As for the network comedy’s biggest competition, look no further than comedy juggernaut “Ted Lasso,” which boasts an Emmy-winning performance from Hannah Waddingham, plus multiple nominations for Juno Temple. Though the presumed final season of the show was not the most showy for their characters, there is little doubt that they both will make it into the category this year.

“Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” coming to an end this season paves the way for past nominees Sarah Goldberg, Alex Borstein, and Marin Hinkle to join them, though there is a trio of formidable newcomers as well, with “The Bear” Ayo Edebiri and “Shrinking” stars Jessica Williams and Christa Miller getting meaty enough supporting work on new hit series to warrant awards attention.

Current Contenders (In Alphabetical Order):
Zazie Beetz, “Atlanta” (FX)
Alex Borstein, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Prime Video)
Ayo Edebiri, “The Bear” (Hulu)
Sarah Goldberg, “Barry” (HBO)
Marin Hinkle, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Prime Video)
Janelle James, “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)
Jane Krakowski, “Schmigadoon” (Apple TV+)
Christa Miller, “Shrinking” (Apple TV+)
Ego Nwodim, “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Sheryl Lee Ralph, “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)
Cecily Strong, “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Juno Temple, “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+)
Hannah Waddingham, “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+)
Lisa Ann Walter, “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)

Last Year’s Winner: Sheryl Lee Ralph, “Abbott Elementary”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: Last year was Sheryl Lee Ralph’s first Emmy win for “Abbott Elementary,” so no streak yet, but if she did win again, she would become the first Black actress to win this category twice.
Notable Ineligible Series: Hannah Einbinder, “Hacks” (Season 3 was not eligible)

2023 Aprilia Limited Edition RSV4 and Tuono V4 Preview

America, here’s your 2023 Aprilia RSV4 Factory Special and Tuono V4 Factory Special Edition.

It’s a common (but profitable) parlor trick to simply reskin existing models with new livery and paint for a “special edition.” But there’s a bit more to Aprilia’s just announced RSV4 Factory and Tuono V4 Factory refreshes.

Editor’s note: We test rode these recently redesigned bikes during the 2021 Aprilia RSV4 Factory Review and 2021 Aprilia Tuono V4 and Tuono V4 Factory Review editorial.

The venerable V-4 superbike and naked-bike duo get revised aerodynamics, with accompanying improvements in airbox pressure and downforce at high speeds. They also get new ergonomics, with redesigned fuel tanks which allow for a more comfortable saddle. Said saddle(s) are said to feature a more upright, relaxed riding position, with more space for movement behind the fairings.

The “revamped” and “stronger than ever” 1,099cc RSV4 Factory motor gets you 217 hp, while the 1,077cc Tuono V4 tops out at 175 hp. These figures haven’t changed in the last year, so the press release is playing a bit of three-card monte with marketing and the English language. It is clearly referring to the 2021 RSV4 Factory and 2021 Tuono V4 Factory refreshes, respectively.

The narrow 65-degree V-4 World Superbike–inspired motor still expresses itself through six riding modes, three for the track and three for the road. Both feature the “new” six-axis Marelli 11MP ECU, full ride-by-wire throttle, and refined APRC operating system. 2021 is still newish, right? The riding modes configure the traction control, wheelie control, engine-braking, and ABS at the touch of a button. Both the RSV4 Factory and Tuono V4 Factory still come fitted with forged aluminum wheel rims and Brembo Stylema brakes.

Although not new, the integration (and usability) of the RSV4′s and Tuono’s engine mapping, semi-active Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension system and rider aids are, by most accounts, still superb. So while you could spend significant time parsing what is/isn’t new, the headline here is that the RSV4 Factory and Tuono V4 Factory remain potent, quick, and built for trackdays. And as we all know, the RSV4 ranks among the faster bikes you can currently buy.

And those new colors and bodywork? To the Motorcyclist eye, the orphaned, lowercase Helvetica “a” motif on the fairings now includes “apri” on the tank, a nice, bold touch. Subtlety isn’t very Italian, anyway.

MSRP for the RSV4 Factory Special Edition will be $26,499, while the Tuono V4 Factory Special Edition is $20,099. Both will be available in the US in May of this year.

Missile: An elegant Triumph Thruxton 1200 by Tamarit

Custom Triumph Thruxton 1200 by Tamarit
Tamarit Motorcycles has enough plug-and-play parts in their catalog to turn any Triumph modern classic into a passable café racer. But the Spanish shop also knows how to take a bike like the Triumph Thruxton, and turn it into something truly spectacular. With over 100 custom Triumph builds in their portfolio, they’ve learned a thing or two about how to make them click.

This Triumph Thruxton 1200 R is one of the most radical café racers that Tamarit has built yet. Its aggressive stance and exaggerated proportions are what catch your eye at first. But once you’re drawn in, you’ll spot an interesting set of mods—and some deft part swaps.

The Triumph Thruxton 1200 R is about as good a donor as you can get for this type of build. It’s one of few factory café racers currently on the market, with enough go to match its show. With 97 hp from its 1,200 cc parallel twin mill, and a mix of Showa, Öhlins and Brembo components, it’s no slouch.

That said, Tamarit saw fit to upgrade the Thruxton’s already capable running gear even more. They kept the Brembo brakes, but swapped out the Showa forks out for a set of upside-downs from the Öhlins Blackline range. A stealthy Öhlins steering damper adds extra stability to the front end.
