United Autosports has confirmed Josh Caygill as the sixth and final driver for its McLaren LMGT3 effort in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Caygill will share the No. 95 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo with Nico Pino and Marino Sato as the mandatory Bronze-rated driver in the lineup.

A former motorcycle racer turned sports car driver, Caygill most recently competed with United in the European Le Mans Series LMP3 class, taking two class podiums in 2022.

Previous GT3 experience for Caygill includes several outings in the 2017 Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup with Team WRT, as well as the Sprint Cup a year later at the wheel of a Team Parker Racing Bentley Continental GT3.

“I am absolutely over the moon to be racing the No. 95 McLaren in the World Endurance Championship,” said Caygill.

“This will be my first season on the world stage and in a McLaren! I am so excited for this opportunity.”

With the recent confirmations of Pino, as well as Bronze-rated driver James Cottingham and reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Brazil champion Nicolas Costa aboard the sister No. 59 McLaren, United has completed its lineup for its first GT3 campaign since 2015.

“Josh is another fantastic addition to our WEC team, completing a dynamic line-up in the No. 95 with co-drivers Marino Sato and Nico Pino,” said team CEO Richard Dean.

“His development with United Autosports over the past two years has been clear, celebrating a pole position and podiums along the way, and I know he will give his full focus to this new challenge in partnership with McLaren Automotive.”

There is an exciting duel ahead between Noah Lyles, who made a name for himself in the 60 meters this winter, and Christian Coleman, world record holder and 2018 world champion. But, Coleman’s experience may not be enough against his strong rival.

Noah Lyles was already a good technician, a true sprinter (1.82 m), aligned and a 200 m specialist. Since he began working seriously on the straight to increase his medal chances – and especially to make history – the Florida man has focused on the 60 m. That event is a concentration of technical demands and physical effort. “I worked on this for seven years and this season I finally succeeded!” he exclaimed in Boston after breaking his record (6’44). A more efficient start, a good transition in the middle and a strong end to the race: that is the new recipe for Lyles, who was even faster three weeks ago at the U.S. Championships (6.43 in Albuquerque.

World record holder Christian Coleman (6.34) is slowly approaching 30 (he turns 28 on March 6), but he is still performing miracles. The former U.S. soccer player, with a more compact build than his rival (6’5″), was way ahead of Lyles in the final of the national championships, their only straight duel this winter. His speed and low starting stance are two of his strengths, but after that the whole thing is more erratic. The shoulder line shifts, leading to loose movements. This lack of agility is felt at the end of the race, which he continued to suffer from in 2018, during his record-breaking season.

Coleman on the path of comeback
Noah Lyles is a rookie as the 26-year-old competes in his first-ever World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, three weeks after his first-ever national title in the 60 meters in Albuquerque. In terms of format, there is nothing crazy on Scottish soil, with heats in the morning and semifinals and finals in the evening. The distance is new, but the favorite status is not. Lyles likes to be in the spotlight: it amuses and stimulates him. His biggest challenge will surely be channeling his boundless energy throughout the day.

Coleman, however, has lost only three times in 40 races (including heats) since the winter of 2016. He has the four fastest times in history (6’34 in 2018 and three times 6’37, in 2018 and 2020). But in the final of the 2022 World Championships in Belgrade, when he had just returned from a suspension for not fulfilling his whereabouts obligations, he was beaten by 3 thousandths by Italian Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs (6.407 vs. 6.410). This slap in the face is undoubtedly enough for the Atlanta sprinter to put things in order.

“MVP! MVP!”. Victor Wembanyama turned the heads of the 18,000 fans present at the Frost Bank Center on Thursday night, single-handedly sinking the Thunder at the end of the game thanks to two clutch shots and an authoritative block on his biggest rival, Chet Holmgren. “I’d missed this s***!” the Frenchman shouted into the arena microphone after the game, happy to be back home, and moved to tears as he launched into the “Go Spurs Go!” chant with the crowd.

Very relaxed during the warm-up, Chet Holmgren won his first one-on-one showdown against Victor Wembanyama before besting him several times with penetration in the paint. The Frenchman’s biggest competition for the Rookie of the Year title was already up to 19 points on 6/7 shooting at half-time. Wemby took longer to get going, sometimes forcing his way off the dribble before Gregg Popovich called him back to the bench. The first flashes of brilliance came from his defense; we saw him record two blocks on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (one of them without needing to jump) and then grab several rebounds.

Ahead at halftime 69-64, the Spurs kicked things into high gear thanks to the French star, who hit back-to-back jump shots only to see the Thunder come back when he was on the bench. However, Victor Wembanyama stepped up at the end of the game with the help of his prowess from behind the three-point line.

“This kid is unique,” said teammate Devin Vassell, who also had a great game with 28 points and 9 assists). Coach Popovich added, “He’s getting more and more physical as the game goes on.” Victor Wembanyama finished with 28 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 blocks, propelling his team to the 132-118 victory.

The intense showdown was also marked by the brilliance of the Spurs’ collective effort, as the 39 assists they recorded is the most they’ve had this season. On the other side of the ball, Gilgeous-Alexander finished as the top scorer with 31 points, while Holmgren added 23.

“Collectively, we’re heading in the right direction,” commented Victor Wembanyama after the game before referring to the Rookie of the Year award. “Of course, individual trophies are important to me. The best way to help my team is to perform well. But I don’t think the race is over, there are still 22 games to go”.

Philadelphia has ‘hope’ that Joel Embiid can return by the end of March or early April

Philadelphia has ‘hope’ that Joel Embiid can return by the end of March or early April – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Last season, Joel Embiid dominated the NBA and won his first league MVP. The former first-round pick was off to a hot start in 2023-24. However, nagging injuries took their toll, and the seven-time all-star has been out since January 30th. On February 6th, Embiid had surgery on his knee to repair his lateral meniscus.

The Sixers said Embiid would be re-evaluated in about four weeks. If that stays true, Philly could give an injury timeline for how much longer the reigning MVP will be out. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the 76ers have “hope” that Embiid can return by the end of March or early April. Philadelphia desperately needs their MVP big man back on the court to help the team win.

Can the Sixers hold on for another month or longer without Joel Embiid?

Before his injury on January 30th, Embiid had played and started 34 games for the 76ers. The 29-year-old was on pace to have another MVP season if he stayed healthy. Embiid was averaging (35.3) points, (11.3) rebounds, (5.7) assists, (1.1) steals, and (1.8) blocks per game. This is the first season where end-of-the-year awards require players to appear in at least 65 games. With all the times he’s missed in 2023-24, Embiid will not be eligible for MVP this season.

At this point, the Sixers need Embiid back as soon as he can return. They’re struggling without their All-NBA center. In his 34 games this season, the 76ers are 26-8. Without Embiid, they are just 7-17. Head coach Nick Nurse has done what he can to survive while Embiid is out. However, the Sixers are noticeably different when Embiid doesn’t play. If all goes well, he could return by the end of March for their last 8-10 games of the season.

For roughly the next 15 games, the 76ers will be without Joel Emiid. Out of 30 teams in the league, the Sixers have the 22nd hardest remaining schedule. Their all-star guard Tyrese Maxey does what he can each night to get the team a win. Maxey isn’t ready to be the face of the franchise just yet and he still needs the help of Philly’s other stars. Tobias Harris, Paul Reed, and Buddy Hield all give solid production. The Sixers’ next game is Friday, March 1 vs. the Charlotte Hornets.
