Note: This is an excerpt from Love Language of the South by Stacy Lyn Harris: A Celebration of the food, the hospitality, and the stories of my Southern home.

I can’t recall when it began. I can’t recall when it ended. I remember eating Sunday dinners at Grandaddy’s house for many years in my childhood. My immediate family was present, as well as my uncle and cousins. As soon as my stepdad’s Toyota 4Runner turned the corner, I would feel an adrenaline rush. Once the car was parked (we did this to make the driveways clear for others) I would race over to my favorite spot on earth, the landing strip of lush grass between my grandfather’s home and the neighbor’s. It was the greenest gymnastics mat I’ve ever seen.

I started my tumbling routine as my parents entered the room, imagining them to be my audience. I tumbled with extreme precision over and over: roundoffs, backhandsprings, backhandsprings, back layouts, backhandsprings. I felt invincible! My mom would shout out the front door “Stacy it’s mealtime,” bringing me back into reality. I would run into the kitchen and head straight to the blue swivel chairs at the end the den. I’d jump in, spin around until I could no longer see straight. Around the time that the world stopped rotating, I would see my grandfather pull the most incredible burgers from the grill.

I would rush to him the second he entered the house and wrap my arms around him. His famous peppered hamburgers were almost knocked to the ground. Grandaddy was not very affectionate, and quiet like my father. He was a half-blooded Creek Indian, and half Greek. He never stopped telling me to stay out of the sunlight, Stacy. His olive-colored skin was darkened by the sun and wrinkled. You don’t wanna end up like this.” Perhaps it was because I loved my husband so much that I thought he looked good. I don’t recall him telling that he loves me, but I remember that he told me that I looked exactly like his mom. It made me feel like I was special because he thought that.

We would all fill our plates to the brim with delicious, but simple food, such as hamburgers, French Fries, fried pickles and fried green tomato. My grandad loved to talk about politics. The adults and children would cram around the kitchen table. Dessert was the only thing that Grandaddy could use to get him off of politics.

His house was always filled with Southern desserts that were historically significant: banana puddings, coconut cream pies, ambrosias, lane cakes, coconut cakes, pineapple upside down cake, and caramel cake. And let me tell, the caramel-cake was the real thing! Desserts never ended, and I didn’t want them to.

After dinner, I used to play hide-and go-seek often with my cousins. My favorite hiding place was at the top of an old oak tree. Stacy, you need to get down from that tree. There’s heat lighting. Every Sunday, heat lightning would occur, followed by a summer rain shower, which brought me inside. The summer Sunday showers signaled the end of the weekend and that it was time to leave, but I knew that I would be back on Sunday.

These weekends are never over. I can still feel the warmth of Grandaddy’s home when I smell a burger being cooked or run my fingertips along a rough piece of wool.

Sunday Firesides: You Should Join a Cult

cult 1

Caption:

The word “cult”, in the modern age, is often used to denigrate.

It didn’t always come with this negative baggage.

The word Cult comes from the Latin cultus which originally referred to agriculture and cultivated land. Romans who were involved in state and private cults used the term to describe a committed cultivation of the rites and habits associated with showing religious reverence.

The word cult was used to refer to religious groups, but it also became a term for “devoted attention” to something or someone.

We could all benefit today from joining a “cult” in the older sense, which is to be unwaveringly and even “excessively” dedicated to a particular set of beliefs or practices. In a world where healthy, virtuous lifestyles are rare and unusual, it is necessary to maintain your ideals with a single-minded devotion, almost religious.

When life is so busy, it’s hard to get up from your desk.

When food is readily available everywhere and at all times, it takes great dedication to not overeat.

When everyone else is giving up on a relationship, it takes a lot of zeal to stick with your marriage.

It takes unrelenting vigilance to think for yourself when the landscape is full of regurgitated, algorithmically-driven chatter.

In a world that is prone to decay and deterioration, it’s impossible to stay sane with a mild-mannered commitment to higher principles and healthy habits. To stay sane, you need to go a bit crazy. You must adopt stand-apart belief systems, strict rules and sacred rituals.

Maserati – Beckham Meets Damiano: Clash of The Titans

The original article can be found here: Maserati: Beckham meets Damiano: Clash of the Titans

The glitz and glamour of two icons who come from radically different worlds coming together under the banner of luxury is a sight to behold. Imagine the legend David Beckham – a name that is synonymous with sportsmanship, elegance, and swagger – facing off against Damiano David – the wild and electric soul and heart of Maneskin – both brought together by a Maserati. Maserati Folgore Electric, not just any Maserati.

Gracie Opulanza is here to give you all the details. I haven’t even driven it!

The Folgore Electric: A Charge of Luxury

The Maserati Folgore was designed to be a thunderbolt of a car. The name “Folgore,” Italian lightning, fits this beauty like it was created from its blueprint. When I first saw it, I got that familiar rush. It was the same feeling as when I put on a pair high-heeled stilettos and wrapped a silken scarlet around my neck. This vehicle is not only a head-turner, but it also spins people around!

You feel like the star of an Italian film as you cruise through the streets. The scenery is blurred, but the style is sharp. The Folgore is all about making an impact without having to say a single word.

Beckham Meets Damiano – Clash of Titans

Let’s now talk about the titans. David Beckham has never been just a football player. He is a fashionista, philanthropist and connoisseur. Combine him with Damiano David – the embodiment of unfiltered passion, Italian charisma and raw, raw emotion.

It was a battle of style and power, not prowess. Beckham with his tailored suits, impeccable grooming and Damiano the modern rock god in leather and tattoos. It was more a symphony than a competition, with each participant playing a part in an ageless dance.

Drive Passion: Electricity with Italian Flair

A trident-branded electric car is like a fine wine. It’s all about taste, sustainability and being forward-thinking. Maserati doesn’t simply jump on the electric wagon; they are reinventing it. Folgore is Maserati’s pledge of innovation wrapped in the sleek and seductive lines that are Italian design.

The Folgore is a vehicle that moves as if it were a whisper, but it impacts as if it was a scream. I am zooming through Italy from the cobbled roads of Rome to sun-kissed beaches of Amalfi. It is a vision of the future and a tribute to those who dare dream big and drive differently. Let’s face it, behind the wheel, the road sings your praises.

Electricity: The future is here.

The soul of driving is not sacrificed by switching to electric. It actually amplifies the relationship between driver and road. The hum of the electric engine is a symphony, a new beginning. Maserati’s use of Beckham and Damiano to promote this revolution sends a clear message: electric isn’t just about efficiency, it is about excitement.

Wrapping up with a Spark

As I conclude my thoughts about this exciting convergence of style, power and sustainability, I feel energized. Maserati Folgore is more than a car; it’s an entire movement. Beckham and Damiano’s distinct charm and rebellious spirit captures this spirit perfectly. Together, they make it clear that choosing Folgore is more than just buying a car. You are choosing a lifestyle. A statement. And, most importantly, your future.

Here’s to the brave, the beautiful and the electrified. Your journeys and adventures should be as exciting as the Folgore.
