The Hayabusa hill climber wails like a banshee as it bangs off the upper range of the rev limiter, a 20-foot-long shower of pine needles, dirt, and rocks in its wake as the modified motorcycle fights for traction on slippery Idaho clay. The back end squirms like a fish on a hook but Matt Spears continues to pin the throttle with dogged determination to make it to the top of the legendary local mountain. Days of pouring rain makes barreling up a steep slope on a 1,340cc superbike even more challenging. Add a janky back tire, stock street suspension, and almost 200 hp to the equation and most times it equals failure. But Spears is not one for failure. Contrarily, it’s at those moments he most often shines, and with the right combination of momentum, riding skills, and a whole lot of bravado, he motored that monstrosity up the mountain.

Spears’ antics on the Hayabusa have been blowing up social media recently. He first hit the internet radar hard with his stunts on an old Gold Wing. Spears possesses a magnetizing exuberance and zeal for not only motorcycles, but life in general. Wanting to know more about the man who came up with the crazy idea to huck huge, high-powered streetbikes around off-road, we talked to Spears. He gladly shared his story.

He grew up in an outdoorsy family riding BMX bikes, then mountain bikes, which led to dirt bike riding. His first motorcycle was a PW50. He got into trials riding and at 17 landed a deal with Beta. At 18, he started working for a Sherco dealer and helped grow it into the largest Sherco dealer in the US. His skills as a trials rider evolved into hard enduro, and at 19 he traveled to Europe to compete in the Gold class. Now 21, he’s having fun wrenching and riding motorcycles and creating content with his lifelong pals.

“As a kid, I always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” Spears said.

In elementary school, he was already a hustler, selling sunglasses to classmates and friends. In middle school he started an eBay store and sold electronics, speaker systems, and a few phones. He later switched to buying and selling used phones by posting Facebook ads. His current dream right now is to build up his YouTube channel, and thanks to his recent work, he’s headed that way.

Description

We are pleased to offer this genuine and immaculate 1971 Chevron B19 – chassis B19-71-30 – for sale.

The Chevron B19 was designed and introduced by Chevron founder Derek Bennett at the beginning of 1971 and followed on from the successful B8 and B16 models. As before, the car was aimed firmly with the privateer in mind, with ease of maintenance and low running costs being vital factors in its design, as well as being a competitive alternative to rival manufacture’s Lola T210. As with preceding B16, the production B19s featured a similarly constructed chassis with fibreglass bodywork and typically an 1,800cc Cosworth FVC engine. Over the following months some 35 individual B19s would be built.

One does not often come across a B19 with unquestionable provenance and B19-71-30 is such a rare, genuine and extremely well documented car with continuous ownership history known from new evidenced by its accompanying Allen Brown’s Oldracingcars dossier. 71-30 also boasts excellent international in-period race results including a 1st overall finish at the 1972 South Africa 6 hours.

The car – bought by its current owner in 2018 (full ownership history can be seen below in the history section) – has always been maintained with no expense spared, is now freshly prepared and comes with FIA HTP papers valid until end of 2025. Its 1800cc Cosworth FVC engine is a fresh, zero km and ECO-Fuel compliant unit recently rebuilt by specialist Geoff Richardson. The car was fully gone through in 2023 including new brake discs and rebuild of the KONI shock absorbers while it was also freshly repainted in its original yellow with a blue centre stripe between two white stripes ‘RAYS’ sponsorship livery. As such, B19-71-30 is sold in 100% race-ready condition with all date-related items current (fuel cell up to 2027) and nothing further to spend.

The car also comes with good spares consisting of 2 sets of spare wheels, a set of rims, +/- 10 gear-ratios, installed pre-heater system, spare water radiator and 2 spare noses while a nose mould is available as an option.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a Chevron B19 with impeccable provenance in immaculate condition which is eligible for all prime istoric sports car races such as Le Mans Classic, Peter Auto’s CER1 and Masters World Sportscars.

Countless motorcycle manufacturers popped up in the 1920s and ’30s in Britain, but somehow, none quite as cool as Vincent. High-end speed machines, combining old-school big-displacement twins, monochrome finishes and titillating names like Rapide and Black Shadow, a Vincent V-twin welcomes you into any roundtable of motorcycling, and it’s not hard to see why. A seat rarely opens at the Vincent Owners Club, even more so when you’re talking about an ultra-rare first-series Rapide.

One of just 79 built, the Series-A Rapide represents Vincent’s first foray into V-twins—an endeavor that established Vincent as the superbike of the day. There are faster Vincents, and on occasion more valuable ones, but the rarity and significance of the Series-A Rapide is hard to overstate. As such, this restored 1938 Rapide highlights Bonhams’ upcoming Spring Stafford Sale with an estimated hammer price of $300,854 to $350,997.

While Vincent didn’t pioneer the V-twin, their execution is at least worthy of an honorable mention. Philip Vincent’s start in motorcycles echoes many of his peers of the era, becoming interested in bikes at a young age and crafting a few ‘specials’ of his own design in the late 1920s. At age 20, Vincent filed a patent for a cantilevered rear suspension design, and with backing from his family, he purchased the financially troubled HRD brand from Howard R Davies in 1928.

Some would say that it’s all really driven by egos, and that is sometimes directly connected to the size of the wallet. Perhaps without such egos we wouldn’t have motor racing at all.

So egos are certainly important, but there is something else that’s behind so many involved in motor racing and, in particular, historic motor sport. I am referring of course to the passion that many have for the sport. A passion that is so strong in some that it outweighs the need for podium finishes and is certainly far stronger than whatever shekels may influence others.
