No partner, this ain’t a mirage you’re seeing.

Western Wear is hot right now, and to be perfectly honest, this time around it might be here for good. Not that we’re complaining. Who doesn’t love the idea of feeling like a cowboy from the golden age of Hollywood, even if the only cattle you’ll be herding today is a pack of ground beef from the supermarket?

The point is, contrary to the beliefs of a few odd purists, you don’t need to actually be a cowboy to have fun dressing like one. Western style, also known as western wear, has a deep, rich history that’s uniquely American and reminiscent of rugged frontier life.

Like any style, it’s evolved plenty over time, and modern, contemporary western wear is somewhat removed from its origins. But the DNA is still there, and historical context is what gives clothing its meaning, after all.

Also, it’s nearly summer, which for some reason, tends to be a big season for western wear. But it’s appropriate all year round if you know what you’re doing! That’s why we’ve created this comprehensive guide, so you can dip your pointy boots into the exciting frontier of great western style. Saddle up!

From the Ground Up: Western Boots

classic brown cowboy boots

Arguably the most iconic and pervasive emblem of classic western style, western boots are a fitting place to start off this guide.

First, a small distinction. While the terms “western boot” and “cowboy boot” are often used interchangeably, technically, cowboy boots are a specific type of western boot. But they’re also often what people think of when they picture western style.

Classic cowboy boots are tall, usually reaching up to the mid-calf, and sometimes even taller. They can have a rounded, squared, or pointed toe, as well as decorative embellishments along the leather. Pull-up tabs or straps and distinctive, tall heels are also considered defining features.

The best cowboy boots are made from high-quality leather, with properly welted soles that can easily be replaced to make them last for years. In terms of versatility, shades of brown and black tend to be the most easy to style.

Western boots are also remarkably easy to style without committing to the full cowboy look. Whether you live in Houston, Texas, the heart of NYC, or anywhere in between, cowboy boots are an enduring style statement that anyone can wear – with just about anything. Check out our definitive guide on western boots here!

In the Saddle: Old Town Blue Jeans

No matter the season – jeans are always your good friend.

The next foundational layer of authentic western style would have to be jeans.

Denim was born on the frontier too, after all! In fact, the fabric was originally used for tents, wagon covers, and similar uses, due to its inherent ruggedness and durability. Eventually, it made its way into clothing use. And so, the jean was born.

While the fit and silhouette of jeans changes with the trends, most western fits feature a flared leg, also known as a bootcut. The degree to which the opening is flared can vary from subtle to extreme, but ideally, it needs to at the very least be able to cover the shaft of your boot without any struggle.

For a truly distinctive and retro western silhouette, a slim upper thigh can really help accentuate the looser calf and bootcut opening. Good cowboy style jeans will also typically feature a higher rise, hugging your natural waist so that they don’t slip.

While shades of blue and indigo tend to be the most classic washes for western jeans (and jeans, period), you can also opt for black, brown, khaki, or even white/off-white denim. At the end of the day, it’s more about the shape and fit.

Western Pant Alternatives

Looking to deviate from the typical denim formula? There are a couple of other options when it comes to western wear pants, though they might require a more discerning eye to pull off.

  • Leather pants/jeans: Leather bottoms can work well with a western aesthetic, too. The same rules apply when it comes to fit, however. They can’t be too snug in the wrong places, and need to fit over the tops of your boots. Black and brown are the safest choices.

  • Polyester “dress” jeans: Popularized in the 70s, polyester knit “dress” jeans were often cut with an iconic flare as a reference to western style, along with a sharp crease down the leg to give it some shape. Today, you can buy a pair of Wrangler Wranchers to achieve this look, and damn, even though they’re 100% polyester, they’re still a ton of fun.

  • Striped “work” pants: These often go by a bunch of names, but their iconic contrasting pinstripes and rugged fabric (often denim or canvas) can still carry a bit of a western flare, or at the very least, a frontier vibe. These don’t necessarily need to have a bootcut, as they’re already cut loose and roomy. Some vintage or vintage-inspired options look great with a pair of casual suspenders.

The Shirt on Your Back: Western Shirts

By now, you probably have a decent understanding of western boots and western jeans (or alternative western-themed) pants. Now this is where things get a bit more flexible – western shirts.

Traditionally men’s western shirts are often made from rugged materials like denim and canvas, but they can also come in lighter fabrics like cotton, linen, and chambray. Their primary characteristics are easy to spot, however.

man wearing a white western shirt with pearl snap buttons and a contrasting brown yoke

Most western style shirts are designed with pointed yokes that fall over the shoulders, typically with two points in the front and one on the back. Sometimes this is just a decorative stitching, other times they can be formed by a contrasting fabric entirely, such as suede leather.

Western shirts are also often outfitted with pearl or metal snap buttons, as well as dual breast pockets. Some versions will also feature decorative piping along various seams, though this is a more retro look. A little billowiness in the arms is common, as well. For the best effect, make sure you tuck the shirt into your jeans. Western style may be rugged, but it ain’t sloppy!

Western Shirt Alternatives

If the design of a traditional western shirt doesn’t do it for you, you’ve still got options.

  • Denim shirts: While some western shirts are made from denim, a regular denim button down can still embody the western aesthetic. You don’t need to commit to the decorative yokes or pearl snap buttons. A reliable denim shirt is a super versatile garment to own, anyway!

  • Plain white t-shirt: You can’t beat the flexibility of a classic white tee. And good news: while old-time cowboys didn’t exactly sport the type of crew-neck t-shirts we wear today, with a contemporary western aesthetic, they still feel right at home. And can look absolutely exceptional when tastefully tucked into a pair of bootcut jeans.

  • Flannel shirts: A quality flannel can work perfectly well with a western aesthetic due to its rugged origins. While better suited for cooler temperatures, it’s a pretty safe option that won’t look out of place.

Outer Layers Suited for The Outback

As long as it ain’t blistering hot outside, western wear isn’t exempt from the rule that most outfits benefit from layering.

  • One of the more contemporary options is a sherpa-lined denim jacket, which works great when paired with any of the aforementioned shirts in the section above.
man wearing a sherpa collared denim jacket
  • You can also sport a suede western jacket, which will also sometimes include a sherpa collar and similar contrasting yokes to that of a western shirt. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, a fringed leather or suede western jacket is also right on theme. Generally, shades of brown will serve you best for any kind of western jacket.

  • There’s also the option to wear a vest! These can vary in weight and materials, which will also determine if it’s more of a decorative layer or a proper piece of outerwear. Suede, leather, cotton, denim, and wool are all on the table here, as are decorative details like yokes and fringes.

  • Looking to incorporate a bit of tailoring? A western sport coat is a classic piece of American fashion that combines casual fabric with western detailing to great effect. Usually made from materials such as tweed or corduroy, western sport coats are marked by, once again, pointed yokes over the shoulders and back of the jacket. They make dressing up a western outfit look like a breeze.

Western Accessories Make a Cowboy Complete

There are a number of classic western wear accessories that you may want to consider before hitting the trail. Most of these are optional, but can add a lot to the overall look of your cowboy-inspired ensemble.

  • Western belts: Characterized by their large and/or intricate buckles, a good western belt should be made from high-quality leather, and almost always match your boots. A cowboy ought to be coordinated!

  • Cowboy hats: If you live in Texas or other parts of the south, you likely know all there is to know about cowboy hats. But in other regions, they may be less common. Even so, their iconic shape is perhaps the most identifiable piece of western wear in existence, only rivaled by cowboy boots.

  • Bandanas, ascots, and neckerchiefs: An accessory around the neck can add a ton of personality to an outfit, almost acting as a stand-in for a tie that works within a western wear aesthetic (though there is also the bolo tie). They may be small, but they make a bold statement.

5 Best-Selling Tom Ford Colognes Every Man Should Try

Tom Ford Black Orchid

It’s not hard to see why Tom Ford colognes are some of the best in the world. They offer a perfect blend of sophistication and masculinity that is hard to find elsewhere.

If you’re looking for a new cologne for yourself or as a gift for someone else, look no further than these five options from Tom Ford.

  1. Black Orchid
  2. Tobacco Vanille
  3. Ombre Leather
  4. Mandarino di Amalfi
  5. Oud Wood

#1 Black Orchid

black orchid by tom ford

Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is a hidden gem when it comes to men’s fragrances. The cologne offers a perfect blend of sophistication and masculinity that is hard to find elsewhere.

If you’re looking for a new cologne for yourself or as a gift for someone else, look no further than this option from Tom Ford.

Black Orchid is the perfect scent for men who want something unique and different. It has all the best qualities of other colognes but with an added edge that makes it stand out from the rest.

Not only does Black Orchid smell great, but it also lasts long. You won’t have to worry about reapplying every few hours as you might with some other colognes.

I’ll be honest – this fragrance might be a bit too floral for guys who prefer traditionally ‘masculine’ fragrances. Technically, Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is actually a unisex fragrance so it can be worn by both men and women.

What this means is, unlike male fragrances, Tom Ford’s Black Orchid won’t make you smell like a old school man. If that’s what you’re going for then this might not be the best cologne for you.

However, if you’re looking for something unique and different, Black Orchid is definitely worth checking out. It’s perfect for making a statement and turning heads wherever you go.

Ultimately, Black Orchid is a great choice for any man who wants to make a statement without going too over the top. It’s perfect for special occasions or date night – but I’d avoid wearing it at the office. In small spaces with lots of people, it can be quite overpowering.

Heart Notes: Orchid, Spices, Gardenia, Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, Lotus

Base Notes: Chocolate, Patchouli, Vanille, Incense, Amber, Sandalwood, Vetiver, White Musk

#2 Tobacco Vanille

mens cold weather colognes tom ford tobacco vanille

Tobacco Vanille is one of those fragrances that you either love or hate.

Personally, I love it – it’s warm, spicy and reminds me of Christmas morning.

So it’s no surprise that Tobacco Vanille is strictly a cold weather fragrance. Wear this in the summer, and you just won’t smell right. It’s too warm, rich and spicy – plain and simple.

However, when those cold days come around, Tobacco Vanille is king. It’s the perfect fragrance to curl up by the fire with. It’s also great for date night or a night out on the town.

Just like Black Orchid, Tobacco Vanille is technically a unisex fragrance so it can be worn by both men and women.

However, I think this one leans more towards being a male fragrance. It just has a certain kind of mystery and masculine allure that most women’s fragrances don’t tend to have.

As with many Tom Ford fragrances, I’d avoid wearing this one to the office. As with Black Orchid, it can be quite overwhelming when worn in a work environment, and people won’t appreciate it in the same way as they would when worn at a party or date.

Top Notes: Tobacco Leaf, Spice Notes

Heart Notes: Tonka Bean, Vanilla Pod, Cocoa bean, Tobacco Blossom

Base Notes: Dry Fruits, Woody Notes

#3 Ombre Leather

tom ford ombre leather

Ever wanted to smell like a Hollywood cowboy?

Then Ombre Leather should be your go-to fragrance.

Leather fragrances are traditionally very masculine simply because of the associations society has with leather – tough guy, jacket wearing men who break hearts and ride motorcycles.

And while that’s certainly attractive to women, Tom Ford’s Ombre Leather is a different kind of leather fragrance. It’s smooth, sophisticated and definitely more Hollywood than Harley Davidson.

By coupling leather notes alongside cardamom, jasmine and amber – Tom Ford has formulated a cologne that’s both masculine and seductive all in one spray. In short, Ombre Leather makes you smell like a sophisticated gentleman in a leather jacket rather than an old leather coach.

This scent is perfect for date night or a night out on the town. It’s also great for special occasions like weddings or anniversaries.

#4 Mandarino di Amalfi

Mandarino di Amalfi tom ford

On the complete opposite side of the scent spectrum, we have Mandarino di Amalfi – Tom Ford’s answer to fresh, summer fragrances.

Sure, the majority of Tom Ford Fragrances are woody and dark scents that are most suited to colder evenings. However, when he does release a summer fragrance, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s going to be incredible.

Madarino di Amalfi is just that: incredible.

For those that don’t know – Amalfi is actually a small coastal town in Italy. A place that’ warm and fresh, where the smell of the ocean fills the street and tellers peddle locally grown fruit from wooden carts.

If that doesn’t tell you what Tom Ford’s Mandarino Di Amalfi smells like then I don’t know what will!

The fragrance opens strong with citrus and develops into a spicy floral dry down. It’s the perfect cologne for a summer vacation to the beach, or a classy dinner date on a hot summer’s eve.

Top Notes: Lemon, Grapefruit, Mint, Basil, Tarragon, Blackcurrant

Heart Notes: Orange Blossom, Jasmine, Clary Sage, Shiso, Coriander, Black Pepper

Base Notes: Musk, Vetiver, Civet, Labdanum, Amber

#5 Oud Wood

Tom Ford Oud Wood

Everyone’s heard of Tom Ford’s Oud Wood – and for good reason.

It’s an incredibly masculine scent that’s perfect for any man that wants to exude confidence, sophistication and an air of mystery.

Oud Wood is a unisex fragrance, but I think it definitely leans more towards being a male cologne. It’s the kind of scent that makes you feel like you can take on the world – and women will certainly be drawn to that.

For those not in the know, Oud is a type of wood that comes from agar trees. It’s considered quite a rare fragrance note and isn’t easy to come by, which is why it’s typically featured in higher-end, niche fragrances.

Tom Ford’s Oud Wood takes the smoky quality of Oud and combines it with a range of other scents including cardamom, sandalwood, vanilla and amber to create a truly masculine fragrance.

It’s the perfect cologne for a night out on the town or a special occasion like a wedding. Just be warned: a little goes a long way with this one!

Of the many fragrances in Tom Ford’s Private Blends collection, I’d say this is one of the more office friendly options. While it certainly isn’t as universally pleasing as many designer colognes on the market, this niche scent won’t take over a room and make people’s noses hurt.

Sure, your colleagues will definitely notice you wearing it, but not to the extent that it’s offending them while they work at their desks.

Notes: Oud, Rosewood, Cardamom, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Sichuan Pepper, Vetiver, Tonka Bean, Amber

No-Fail Color Combos For Men: Summer 2024 Edition

man wearing navy blue shorts with a white tee and dark red cotton cardigan

One of the trickier elements of achieving good style is color theory. That is, what looks good together, what matches, what contrasts well, the works!

When men initially start their style journey, before they learn about the context and history of various aesthetics, they’ll often try tackling color first.

And for good reason. Not matching correctly or poor color choices are a quick and easy way to doom your outfit. Getting it right takes a trained eye – or a handy guide like this one.

Specifically in the summer months, there tend to be more color options available to men’s clothing than ever. Less layers means our outfits are sometimes encouraged to make a statement through different means, whether that’s through pattern, texture, or perhaps most obviously, color!

And so, without further ado, here are our recommendations for no-fail color combinations for men’s outfits this summer.

White, Red, and Navy Blue

man wearing navy blue shorts with a white tee and dark red cotton cardigan

Perhaps a bit on-the-nose for the Fourth of July season, but arguably all the more so appropriate because of it, there’s something nostalgic about loosely representing the American flag during the summer – albeit tastefully.

One sure way to nail this formula without mistakenly getting raised along the flag pole is to combine a classic white tee with navy blue pants, shorts, or denim, along with a primary or dark red cardigan for cool summer evenings.

Too warm for the cardigan? Consider a blue and red patterned top with white shorts or white linen trousers for a similar effect with more cooling factor.

It’s a brilliant combo with just a dash of patriotic flair. Trust us!

Off-White, Tan, and Forest Green

man wearing off-white painter pants with a tan belt and a dark green linen shirt

Sometimes, deep contrast is what you want for maximum dynamism in an outfit. To experiment with this color combination, try pairing a pair of off-white painter/carpenter pants with a dark, forest green top (either a tee or a camp collar shirt). Tie it all together with a pair of tan loafers and a matching tan braided belt!

Looking to go cooler? Perhaps opt for a pair of forest green shorts and an off-white tee. Finish it off with a sleek pair of tan espadrilles or elegant fisherman’s sandals, and you’re ready to hit the sun!

Classic Black and White

man wearing a pair of white linen trousers with a black knit polo and black loafers

Minimalism can be elegant, and there’s no better proof than the classic black and white combo.

This generally works best for slightly elevated outfits, ranging from smart casual to business casual. Try starting with a pair of white pleated trousers, preferably in a breathable fabric like cotton, or even better, linen. Pair them with a black knit polo, tucked in ideally, and accessorize with a black leather belt and matching loafers.

A more elegant way to spin this combo is with a white linen suit – paired with a simple black tee shirt. If you’re feeling a bit of retro flair in your veins, dare to swap the tee for a black shirt with a 70s-inspired, jumbo collar worn popped over the jacket’s lapels. You can totally pull it off with confidence – we promise.

Autumnal Orange and Sage Green

man wearing sage green seersucker pants with a burnt orange camp collar shirt and tortoiseshell sunglasses

Are you an autumnal soul? As in, someone who wishes it was fall during all three other seasons? We don’t blame you! Autumn color palettes are some of the most visually pleasing and downright cozy.

The good news is, you don’t have to wait until fall to incorporate autumnal earth tones into your summer wardrobe! It’s not like it’s illegal. If anything, it’s a fun nod to another season when worn properly.

A burnt or rust orange definitely screams fall, but when utilized on a classic camp collar shirt and paired with a more summery sage green (either in short or linen trouser iterations), it surprisingly works!

Soft Pink and Deep Blue

outfit of dark blue linen trousers with a soft pink linen button down shirt

When worn well, pink can be a surprisingly masculine color that echoes elegance and signals sophistication.

An easy way to see this for yourself is by pairing deep blue trousers (try seersucker or linen for ideal weather friendly comfort) with a soft pink linen shirt – either long sleeve or short. You can also swap the pants for shorts if that’s more your thing.

The rich contrast between pink and blue tones is especially exciting in summer, where both colors reign highly.

White on White on White (or Maybe Tan)

Man sitting down at an outdoor Italian cafe wearing white linen pleated pants, a matching white linen shirt tucked in, and tan loafers

No, no, we’re not kidding around with this one. If you’re lacking in the hair department, you might choose to avoid this combo in order to beat the “Mr. Clean” allegations, but when done well, we still think this look is a power-move.

The key is to incorporate summer texture. White pants or shorts in either linen or seersucker, combined with a white top in a similar fabric. Linen on linen works wonders. Seersucker on linen is great, too. Seersucker on seersucker tends to work best with a suit, but use your discretion.

Finish it off with either white sneakers (canvas ones are great) or a daring white loafer. Alternatively, if you want to break up the white just a drop, consider opting for tan shoes with a matching belt. In many ways, it’s arguably more elegant.

Tan and Teal

man wearing tan pleated chinos with a teal camp collar shirt

Tan is a canvas upon which everything will match, which is why going bold and exciting with a contrasting shade is a good bet. Teal is a fine choice because it’s reminiscent of mediterranean oceans and mosaic tiles, further reinforcing the summery association.

The safest way to approach this look is with tan chinos or shorts combined with a rich teal top (either a tee, linen shirt, or camp collar shirt). Tan or brown accessories will seal the deal, but an alternative method is to reverse the colors on their head.

Teal shorts are quite striking but within the bounds of good taste, and a tan linen shirt looks absolutely stellar with them. Try it for yourself!

Beige, Chocolate Brown, and Sage Green

man wearing beige linen trousers with pleats, paired with a sage green tee shirt tucked in, and dark brown loafers and a dark brown braided leather belt

Looking for something similar to the previous option but one that works a bit better in more professional settings? Beige trousers, paired with chocolate brown loafers and a matching belt, look great with sage green, a calmer alternative to teal.

Sometimes referred to as seafoam green, sage looks especially elegant when represented by a linen fabric.

Calm Gray and Black

man wearing relaxed-fitting pleated gray high-waisted trousers with a black knit polo, black belt, and black loafers

Don’t underestimate the versatility of gray in your summer wardrobe. In truth, it can go with almost anything, but looks sleekest when paired with black.

Not convinced? Try combining a pair of gray linen pants with a black knit polo for that after work rooftop party, or gray shorts with a black tee for a sleek and minimal laid-back day. From fine summer tailoring to relaxed and leisurely attire, this combo is something of a cheat code, if you ask us.

Maroon and Mint

Man wearing a pair of mint green seersucker shorts with a maroon polo shirt and white sneakers

We’re not done with shades of red! Maroon is often seen as one of the more mature shades, but you can make it feel a bit more playful if you pair it next to an airy mint color tone.

A pair of mint green (fainter than sage, in most cases) pants or shorts delivers extra wow-factor when placed alongside a maroon red top. From tees to polos to linen button downs, you’ve got options. But you can reverse the positions too! Try maroon shorts with a mint tee on toasty days for a look that’ll keep you cool and looking, well, cooler!

Lastly, Experiment!

Aside from these specific seasonal recommendations, allow yourself to have fun and experiment with different color and color combinations on your own! It takes time and experience to gain a truly trained eye, and while learning the basics of color theory can help, your personal style journey will thank you for any hands-on experience!.

So go out there, and give some of these a whirl. When you’re ready, feel free to try new ideas out for yourself!
