Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were once two of the biggest movie stars on the planet, known for their roles in the hit films Terminator and Rocky respectively.

But despite forging their own successful careers in Hollywood, the pair had a bitter and highly-publicised feud in the 1980s and 1990s.

According to Page Six this week, Schwarzenegger reportedly told guests at the funeral of lawyer Jake Bloom that he once “despised” his box office rival “because they were so competitive with one another, comparing everything from the size of their muscles to the size of their pay checks”.

Schwarzenegger is said to be worth a whopping $450million USD ($712million AU), while Stallone is said to be worth a cool $400million USD ($614million).

However, Schwarzenegger said at the memorial that it was indeed the late Bloom who helped end their decades-long feud, saying they eventually became friends when Bloom wanted to bring in the Rocky star as a co-owner of the chain restaurant Planet Hollywood in 1991.

The publication reports that the former rivals soon became friends as they flew around the world promoting the business, which was launched with the backing of the pair, as well as Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

9Honey takes a look back at the pair’s infamous feud – and how they overcame their bitter rivalry to eventually star in a number of hit films together.

1977: The Golden Globes Awards incident

The pair first met each other at the 1977 Golden Globe Awards, with the meeting soon turning awry thanks to Stallone, now 77, throwing a bowl of flowers at Schwarzenegger, now 76.

According to Express UK, Stallone said in a recent interview that Schwarzenegger began making fun of him at the event when Rocky kept losing out on awards.

He described their soon-to-be rivalry as “violent hatred” and added on The Jonathan Ross Show that they “couldn’t stand to be in the same galaxy together… We truly, truly loathed each other.”

“I’m going, who is this big guy?” Stallone reportedly said.

“And he’s gloating and gloating [about Rocky not winning].”

“I managed to grab this giant bowl of flowers,” Stallone said.

“And heaved it in his direction. It had lilies and tulips… It began a ten-year battle royale. And I thought: The gauntlet is down.”

1988: Stallone rips down Schwarzenegger poster in nightclub

Stallone reportedly entered a New York City nightclub in 1988 and saw a Schwarzenegger poster on the wall and demanded it be removed or he would leave.

Stallone’s entourage reportedly destroyed the poster.

According to The Daily Mail, it came from Schwarzenegger’s refusal to back Stallone’s all-male smoking club and his dig at his clothes – including a ‘f–king fur coat’.

1991: Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The two often went head-to-head at the box office.

Earlier this year, Austrian actor Schwarzenegger said he wanted to ”out do” Stallone with the body count in the Terminator film, Judgement Day.

According to Deadline he recently said: ”I was killing 68 people in the first one.”

“In the second one I have to kill 150. We go up! Cut their throats and shoot them with a cannon and run them over with a car.’ I had to outdo Stallone. I said that my whole mission was being number one at killing amounts of people on screen.”

According to The New York Post, Stallone recently said in Schwarzenegger’s Netflix documentary that his former rival was the better action star.

“The ’80s was a very interesting time because the definitive ‘action guy’ had not really been formed yet,” Stallone reportedly said.

He noted how you didn’t need that much dialogue in the films to tell the story.

“You actually relied upon your body to tell the story,” he said.

“I saw that there was an opportunity because no one else was doing this except some other guy from Austria, who doesn’t need to say much … He was superior. He just had all the answers. He had the body. He had the strength. That was his character,” he explained.

1991: Planet Hollywood

Back in the early ’90s, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis backed Planet Hollywood – a chain restaurant that would make them millions.

Stallone previously said he ”begged” to come on board. The three were some of the biggest action movie stars at the time.

“I begged,” he told Larry King in 1993.

“They saw me outside on my knees saying, ‘Please!'”

He also jokingly told Michael Aspel, a TV host, that the signed on out of ”greed,” as he wasn’t short of cash.

“Kidding… well, sort of greed…” he said.

“It would be fun. And you know, it’s nice not to just be making films all the time, to venture out and deal with real people.”

This week, Schwarzenegger said that it was lawyer Jake Bloom that made them get over their rivalry.

1992: Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

Stallone once said on The Jonathan Ross Show that the Terminator actor had once baited him to take a role in a dud movie.

“He’s quite clever. He goes around town saying, ‘I can’t wait to do this film…’ I go to my agent, ‘Get that thing away from him. Get people options on me.'”

The Godfather star ended up taking a leading role in 1992’s Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot opposite Estelle Getty and regretted it instantly, which was apparently all a part of Schwarzenegger’s plan.

The actor elaborated: “I got it and I said, ‘What a piece of s–t this is.’ He goes, ‘Ha ha ha!'”

Stop! Or my Mum will shoot!

Schwarzenegger confirmed this. “It’s 100 percent true. In those days we did all kinds of crazy things to get ahead in our rivalry,” he said.

“Luckily for us and everyone else, today, we root for each other. Thank God, because we sure don’t ever need another Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.”

However, according to Stallone, Schwarzenegger would get his own comeuppance when he took on a dismal role in Ivan Reitman’s Junior. In the film Schwarzenegger plays a scientist who gets himself pregnant using an experimental drug. Junior has a lowly score of just 22 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stallone joked: “At least I wasn’t pregnant in a film, Arnold. We’re even.”

2012: The actors both shoulder surgery

Back in 2012, the action film stars made headlines when they both went into surgery on the same day, at the same hospital, for operations on their shoulders.

At the time, Schwarzenegger shared a picture on his Whosay account showing the pair in adjacent beds.

The pair also worked together on The Expendables and the subsequent installments, which also co-starred the likes of Jason Statham and Bruce Willis.

Now: Burying the hatchet

In November last year, Stallone said they are now “really good friends,” but said they had such a feud over the years because they were both so “competitive”.

“We really disliked each other immensely because we were… this may sound a little vain, but I think we were pioneering a kind of genre at that time and it hasn’t been seen since really,” he told Forbes.

“So the competition, because it’s his nature, he is very competitive and so am I… and I just thought it actually helped, but off-screen we were still competitive and that was not a healthy thing at all, but we’ve become really good friends.”

In October last year, Schwarzenegger shared a picture of the pair on Instagram and carving pumpkins.

“Happy Halloween,” the post was captioned.

The former Governor of California told PEOPLE earlier this year about Stallone: “I really admire him.”

“I love him. He’s just a different person than me. He’s much more raw, and he’s much more vulnerable and in touch with his emotions,” he added of his friend.
