Peter Hoar is elated after being nominated for a Primetime Emmy in the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series category for The Last of Us.

Speaking to MovieWeb, he opens up about how not unlike his previous work on It’s a Sin, he invested his skills in displaying emotional complexities on screen that also make up for a great, soul-wrenching storyline.

“I think what really means a lot, is that I got a BAFTA for It’s a Sin and now an Emmy nomination for this, and they’re both very important queer stories to me and to people that have seen them — it feels incredible that this has all happened because I love what I do.”

He draws examples from the series’ third episode, “Long, Long Time” which addressed queer romance amidst the grim and gritty reality of the post-apocalyptic world. The love between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Barlett) constitutes the episode’s key plot which culminates in their tragic fate.

Hoar, in this context, mentioned how bringing a queer-based love story gave the viewers an insight into how personal relationships and love between individuals thrive amidst a world where contagious viruses and cordyceps-infested creatures dominate and reinforce de sensitivity. It also portrays how emotional devastation runs parallel to the massive ruins of the outside world.

The episode which depicts the love between two men reflects the director’s way of addressing sensitive topics and how they can be incorporated into plots revolving around the themes of destruction, death, and adventure without losing relevance.

Even the best episodes aren’t without challenges, though. Hoar revealed that making the episode was challenging due, to Nick Offerman’s hesitation in playing the role despite his casting being unanimously praised.

“Murray is a gay man, he’s played gay many times, [he] has had scenes in bed many times — it’s always a thing for an actor, but Murray could handle it. Murray knew what he was doing. Nick had never done anything like that, so there was a nervousness there, there was a hesitation — but all of it fed into the character. He was looking at all the tools we had around, and he knew every single one of them. He knew what they did and how to use them, he was fixing bits and pieces on set. He was incredible, and I think that’s why he was perfect.”

His nomination for the 2023 Emmy Awards proves Hoar’s success in getting the rightful recognition for his work. The real award, as implied by him, goes to the stories, emotions, and beliefs that one wishes to incorporate into their work.  “Hold your nerve, stick to the things that you understand, and tell stories the way you want to tell them. The voice in your head is a good voice. Don’t deny it,” is how he summed up his overall approach to storytelling.

Why are the Emmys happening again if they just had a ceremony in January?

18

18 1

A new batch of Emmy nominations has dropped, which might seem perplexing, considering it was just yesterday that we were witnessing The Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach kiss his cast-mate Matty Matheson square on the lips on stage at the Peacock Theater after their show won Best Comedy Series. Well, that’s what it feels like, anyway.

Moss-Bachrach and all the boys and girls of The Bear are back in force on this new list of nominees, even breaking the record for most nods ever for a comedy series in a single year, but no one can quite figure out what season they’re all being nominated for.

What about the Emmys that happened in January?

That’s an excellent question! In January, television’s biggest names flocked to the Emmy Awards red carpet for the show’s 75th edition. That event was initially scheduled for its usual September slot in 2023, purposeful and carefully timed to ring in new television seasons with a celebration of the last, but then a major Hollywood crisis broke out that you may or may not recall.

2023 was defined, in part, by a pair of dueling Hollywood strikes that put nearly every film and television production on standby from May to November. Not only did the writers and actors’ strikes affect release schedules, but they also prevented those in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA from working in any capacity, including participating in a telecast like the Emmys as presenters and hosts (they could still be there as nominees, but who would be handing out the awards and delivering all the bad jokes?).

Make no confusion, however; the 75th Emmy Awards count as the 2023 Emmys and, regardless of the change in broadcast date, the only shows eligible for that ceremony were still those that aired between June 2022 and May 2023. That is why seasons that aired long before the 75th Emmy statuettes were even handed out — such as season 2 of The Bear, which dropped June 2023 — count towards the Emmys happening this September. The January ceremony awarded the FX show’s first season. So, for the dissenters who didn’t like the show’s third season that recently came out, don’t worry, that one hasn’t even been nominated yet.

2023 was not the first time the Emmys were delayed

The ceremony is rarely moved to a different date, but it’s not entirely unheard of.

Take 2001, which saw the ceremony shifted by several months. The 53rd Primetime Emmy Awards were initially slated to air in mid-September, as usual, but saw two delays push the awards back by a good seven weeks. The initial delay was prompted by the 9/11 attacks, which devastated the nation just five days before the ceremony was initially slated to air, and the 53rd Emmys were later delayed yet again by the early-October commencement of the two-decade-long war in Afghanistan.

Which Show Got the Most Nominations for the 2024 Emmys?

33 2

33 3

For anyone betting on which TV shows would be nominated today at the Emmys, one title was a pretty safe bet. Throughout its run, the epic series Shgun was widely acclaimed across every aspect of its production, so it would be a shock if it didn’t get nominated at all. Now, with the nominations out, the series has made the cut and then some. The Hiroyuki Sanada-led series landed a whopping 25 nominations, the most for any TV series in 2024.
