Scientists from the James Webb Space Telescope shared the first images from space taken by the new telescope. Since the 18-segment mirror is in the early stages of being aligned, the first image is understandably blurry and a bit jumbled. But its exactly what the team wanted to see.

“The initial results are very similar to our simulations and matches our predictions,” said Lee Feinberg, JWST’s Optical Telescope Element Manager, speaking at a press briefing on February 11, 2021. “We don’t see anything of concern. But this is the first time using the components of the telescope at zero gravity, and the results … shows that the NIRCam (Near Infrared Camera) instrument is an excellent wavefront actuator.”

While the team is not calling these images “first light,” they said the images meant that they have “detected photons from outer space for the first time with the telescope.”

The first image is a mosaic of 18 images of the same star – one image for each of the unaligned segments. The light from the star was reflected back at Webb’s secondary mirror and into NIRCam’s detectors. The image proves that NIRCam is ready to collect light from celestial objects, and then identify starlight from the same star in each of the 18 primary mirror segments.

Webb scientists assured that the images will become clearer when the mirror segments are aligned to act as one giant 6.5-meter mirror, and also when the telescope and instruments reach their intended operating temperatures. Feinberg said JWST is currently about 60 degrees over the negative 370 degrees Fahrenheit (negative 223 degrees Celsius) optimal operating temperature.

The second picture is a ‘selfie’ of sorts, showing the mirror segments. It was taken with a special lens within the NIRCam instrument, which is meant for engineering, not science, and allows NIRCam to capture an “inward-looking” image of the primary mirror. While all the mirror segments are seeing starlight, the one segment looks bright because, from NIRCam’s view, the segment is directly aligned with the star. This image allows the team to check that the telescope is aligned with the science instruments.

Ultralight Jackets Explained

What is an ultralight shell jacket? There’s no consensus definition, and considerable variation among today’s models. But basically, the term “ultralight jacket” explains their primary advantage: They weigh under about 10 ounces—and some a fraction of that—and are very packable, often stuffing down to the size of a fist. In other words, they are usually less than half the weight and bulk of a standard waterproof-breathable jacket. While a few may be partly or even fully waterproof, many are water-resistant and windproof, providing a minimum level of protection from the elements.

While these jackets, also known as ultralight wind shells, are marketed primarily to trail runners, they are often a better choice than a heavier, bulkier rain jacket for dayhikers, climbers, and lightweight/ultralight backpackers who don’t expect to encounter heavy rain. I’ve used many of the models reviewed here for lightweight dayhikes and some of the more durable models for backpacking and climbing when the forecast threatened no more than passing showers or thunderstorms.

I’ve also used the Mountain Radio resort skiing at Northern California’s Palisades-Tahoe and Sugar Bowl resorts with my young-adult son, enabling us to discuss which runs to ski whenever we were too far apart to hear one another, or to locate one another when we took different runs. Starship | 360 Video of Liftoff

Starship returned to integrated flight testing with its second launch from Starbase in Texas. While it didn’t happen in a lab or on a test stand, it was absolutely a test. What we did with this second flight will provide invaluable data to continue rapidly developing Starship.

On November 18, 2023, Starship successfully lifted off at 7:02 a.m. CT from Starbase in Texas and achieved a number of major milestones, including all 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy Booster starting up successfully and, for the first time, completed a full-duration burn during ascent.

This 360-degree view comes from the top of the launch tower at Starbase in Texas, providing a front row seat to watch liftoff of the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed.
