RACING PEDIGREE: This 1963 Corvette Split-Window Packs a Z06 Punch

Out of the past seven decades of Corvette production, the model year 1963 is particularly important to collectors and enthusiasts with the debut of the redesigned second-generation Corvette Sting Ray. Featuring otherworldly body styling – now in Split-Window coupe and convertible forms, the new Corvette Sting Ray design was rooted in sketches penned by a young Peter Brock in 1957, with further development through GM design chief Bill Mitchell’s self-funded, SCCA champion Stingray race car and refinements to production reality by Larry Shinoda.

As the first Corvette to be equipped with fully independent suspension as standard equipment, the advanced new 1963 Sting Ray was also available with a comprehensive racing option that gained immediate fame as the RPO Z06 Special Equipment Package. Including most everything necessary to obtain a virtually race-ready Corvette straight from the dealer floor, RPO Z06 brought an array of upgrades, including a thicker front stabilizer bar, larger-diameter shock absorbers, higher-rate springs and uprated brakes, including fade-resistant sintered metallic brake linings, plus a dual-circuit master cylinder and vacuum booster. Initially priced at $1,818.45, adding the RPO Z06 package cost nearly half as much as the basic Corvette Sting Ray.

Early in the 1963 model year, the Z06 package was a coupe-only option, but later made available for Corvette convertibles at reduced cost. While attractive cast-aluminum “knock-off” wheels were initially available, they were somewhat porous and leaked air, resulting in the majority of Z06 cars being fitted with tried-and-true steel wheels. Corvettes equipped with RPO Z06 were only available with Chevrolet’s RPO L84 327ci V8 rated at 360 horsepower with Rochester “Ramjet” mechanical fuel-injection, 11.0:1 compression, free-breathing cylinder heads, low-restriction exhaust and a hot solid-lifter cam. A 4-speed manual transmission and posi-traction limited-slip rear end were mandatory options. Reducing unnecessary weight, some Z06 Corvettes left the St. Louis factory with radios deleted. Except for roll bars and fire extinguishers, Z06 Corvettes could virtually be driven to the track, raced and driven home.

Californian racing legend Mickey Thompson was one of a select few offered the opportunity to preview the new Corvette Sting Ray in 1962, along with star driver Dan Gurney and Gulf Oil executive Grady Davis. Thompson, who forged a relationship with “Bunkie” Knudsen, who headed Chevrolet, saw the new Corvette as an American rival to Ferrari’s then-dominant GT cars and a true Le Mans contender. Accordingly, Knudsen tasked Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov to develop the Z06 Corvette as an FIA-compliant, GT-class race car with an eye to American SCCA and FIA-sanctioned international competition.

By summer 1962, Z06-equipped 1963 Corvettes were available for racing, with fast-rising West Coast drivers Bob Bondurant, Dave Macdonald and Jerry Grant flown to St. Louis to pick up their newly assigned Sting Ray coupes, which they drove home to break in their engines during the trip. Another four cars were air-freighted to Los Angeles, where they were picked up by Mickey Thompson and his crew. One was entered into the October 1962 Los Angeles Times Grand Prix at Riverside, driven to victory by Doug Hooper over an early Shelby Cobra. Areas for improvement were identified, analyzed and corrected in preparation for Thompson’s four-car assaults on Daytona and Sebring during early 1963. The obvious threat posed by Carroll Shelby’s lightweight V8 Cobras spurred Arkus-Duntov to activate the radical and highly promising Grand Sport Corvette program that would never reach fruition after GM unilaterally withdrew from factory-backed racing in 1963.

In all, 2,610 Corvettes were powered by the top-shelf RPO L84 “Fuelie” engine, and just 199 of them were equipped with the all-out RPO Z06 package. The 1963 Split-Window Corvette showcased here is one of those precious few, and it benefits from a professional body-off restoration with virtually no expense spared to factory specifications by renowned D&M Corvette Specialists of Downers Grove, Illinois. When the Honda Dax was brought back into production a couple of years ago, K-Speed wasted little time getting their grubby paws on it. The Thai powerhouse’s founder, the mysterious Mr Eak, had a 50 cc Dax as a teenager—and the workshop is particularly good at customizing small Hondas. So a K-Speed-customized Dax was inevitable.

Two years on, and K-Speed is still finding interesting ways to cram massive levels of badassery into Honda’s bite-sized mini-bike. This time, they’ve turned the Dax into an uber-sassy—albeit impossibly compact—café racer.

Although K-Speed churns out countless custom bikes a year for paying customers, this one was a shop build. Eak wanted to see how far he could push the 2024-model Honda ST125 Dax, visually, without modifying its pressed steel frame (which also houses its fuel tank). Luckily K-Speed has an extensive range of Honda mini-bike parts to draw from, manufactured under their ‘Diabolus’ brand.

Dubbed ‘Puppy Racer,’ K-Speed’s custom Honda Dax benefits most from a radical stance adjustment. The crew started with a new Diabolus front end, comprising upside-down forks and a more modern-looking top yoke. It sits lower than the stock setup, as do the twin Diabolus shocks that now prop up the rear.

As thousands of car enthusiasts streamed through the gates of The World’s Greatest Collection Car Auctions on Thursday, they were met with sunshine, blue skies and over 600 collector cars on display at the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction.

The auction site at the South Florida Fairgrounds offered something for everyone on the first day of the event. Guests were able to see all the collector cars before they had their turn on the famous auction block, check out interactive displays and demonstrations from more than 100 exhibitors and sponsors, and grab a bite to eat from a wide variety of offerings.

The day’s activities included the demonstration of a 1976 Leopard 1 A5 Battle Tank (Lot #696), which will cross the block with No Reserve on Saturday, April 20, highlighted by the unmistakable rumble of its 37.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine and the turning of the turret. Additional demonstrations are scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. near the South Showcase.

Another must-experience highlight of the day was an exhilarating ride around the Barrett-Jackson Performance Track with a professional driver at the Dodge Thrill Rides and Ford Hot Laps. In addition, the Volvo Driving Experience gave guests the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a new Volvo for a cruise along the streets of Palm Beach.

Of course, the real not-to-be-missed element of the event was watching all the exciting bidding action in the arena itself.

The morning’s activity began with nearly 200 examples of collectible cool up on the block during the Automobilia Auction, where Lot #6299.2, a large Kenny Rogers Roasters light-up sign and Lot #6298.4, a Chevrolet OK Used Cars neon sign, proved to be the stars of Thursday’s show. Three gas pumps also took the spotlight: a 1940s-50s Gulf Bennett Model #646 (Lot #6291) and a late-1940s/early-50s Gulf Oil Premium Gasoline Tokheim 39 (Lot #6292). A late-1940s/early-1950s Texaco Bennett Model 756 (Lot #6289.1) rounded out the day’s top five automobilia sales.

Before the collector cars started to cross the block for the day, Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson was joined on the block by President Steve Davis, along with Shelby American President Gary Patterson, Vice President of Operations Vince LaViolette, and Sales and Marketing Manager Kash Singh, as well as Tracy Smith, Executive Vice President of Carroll Shelby International, to debut Shelby’s latest creation: the 2024 Shelby Super Snake. The special car, along with a convertible version, will be on display throughout the Palm Beach event in the Shelby American display.

Over 175 of the more than 600 No Reserve collector cars on this year’s docket took their turn on the block Thursday, with 1956 Ford Thunderbird Convertible (Lot #106.1), a 1970 Ford Torino custom coupe (Lot #100.1), 2007 Aston Martin DB9 Volante (Lot #103) and a 1968 Ford Mustang GT convertible (Lot #108) all taking top honors for the day.

The first two cars from John Staluppi’s Cars of Dreams Collection had their turn in the spotlight today. The first, a 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible (Lot #82), was among the top sales of the day, and it was followed by Lot #82.1, a 1974 Volkswagen Thing convertible. The remaining vehicles in the collection will cross the block on Friday and Saturday with No Reserve.

We have a particular affinity for modern Vespa scooters around here. Our founding editor, Chris Hunter, used to commute on one in Sydney, I used to commute on one in Cape Town, and our good friend, Winston Yeh, bops around Taipei on his (a black one, naturally). But we wouldn’t have the first clue on how to customize a modern Vespa.

They’re cute enough as they are, begging to be lightly accessorized rather than heavily modified. It takes a lot of imagination to look past the iconic bodywork and see something radically different. Luckily, Adam Eldridge has imagination in spades.

Based in Austin, Texas, Adam’s a fabricator who’s spent the last two decades honing his craft. Working under the banner of Python Lair Designs, he’s built custom bicycles, choppers, and hot rods, and has even tackled interior architectural metalwork.

The commission for the Vespa came from Guido DeVita—an enigmatic 70-something-year-old petrolhead with an equal love for cars and bikes, and zero regard for convention. Adam’s done regular work for Guido’s business, ilGaragista, and describes it as “a custom shop with no boundaries other than a checkbook.”
