REVOLUTIONIZE SUBURBAN STATUS: Own a Piece of Military History with the 1976 Leopard 1A5 Battle Tank!

Written by Nicole Ellan James

LOT #696 – 1976 LEOPARD 1 A5 BATTLE TANK – NO RESERVE

Drive through any neighborhood in American suburbia and you will likely see a plethora of boats parked in driveways, RVs tucked within side yards and shiny new-model cars gleaming in garages. We know what you’re thinking: How are you not only going to keep up with, but surpass, the Joneses?

You’re sure to be the envy of all with a 1976 Oto Melara Leopard 1A5 Battle Tank sitting on your property. The fully refurbished and operational tank is offered with No Reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s 2024 Palm Beach Auction, to be held April 18-20 at the South Florida Fairgrounds.

That history buff with the new Porsche down the street will flip when he learns your new Kampfpanzer Leopard 1 tank was designed by Porsche and manufactured by Krauss-Maffei in West Germany. The design for the tank began as a collaborative project during the 1950s between West Germany and France, and later joined by Italy, but the partnership ended shortly thereafter. The final tank design was ordered by the Bundeswehr, armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany, with full-scale production starting in 1965 and the tank entering service that same year.

What made the design so popular among the armed forces of the world was that it focused on effective firepower and mobility instead of heavy protection. As a result, the tank features moderate armor that is really only effective against low-caliber autocannons and heavy machine guns. The lack of hard-core armor means it isn’t as heavy as other fortified tanks, so it has a high power-to-weight ratio ‒ meaning you can probably outrun any other tanks you happen to come across while traversing the backwoods or bayous in your part of the country. This, coupled with a modern suspension and drivetrain, gave the Leopard superior mobility and cross-country performance compared to most other main battle tanks of the era, only being rivaled by the French AMX-30 and Swedish Strv 103. Rest assured, it’s unlikely anyone in your neighborhood would have one of those.

The most eye-catching and impressive part of the tank is the main gun, a German license-built version of the British Royal Ordnance L7 105mm rifled gun, which has been deactivated to ATF specs.

Any gearhead within a 5-mile radius of your house is going to want to know what’s “under the hood,” so to speak. The tank is powered by an MTU MB 838 Ca-M500 turbocharged diesel engine rated with approximately 820 horsepower, or 610 kilowatts, at 2,200 rpms. The 37.4-liter 10 cylinder 4-stroke engine has a V-90 configuration and is liquid-cooled. It is also tuned with a multi-fuel capability, but typically runs on diesel fuel (NATO designation F-54), consuming approximately 190 liters per 100 kilometers which is a little over one mile per gallon.

The engine is backed by a PowerPack with a ZF 4HP-250 transmission system, which has a hydraulic torque converter, locking clutch, planetary gearbox and pivot turn mechanism (for each of the gears). In the event you ever need to swap out the powerpack and transmission, it can easily be done in about 20 minutes because it is mated to the hull with quick-disconnect couplings.

In total, 6,485 Leopard tanks have been built: 4,744 battle tanks, 1,741 utility and anti-aircraft variants, and an additional 80 prototypes and pre-series vehicles. The Leopard quickly became the standard of many European militaries, and eventually served as the main battle tank in over a dozen countries worldwide, with West Germany, Italy and the Netherlands being the largest operators until the tank’s retirement. The Leopard 1 started to assume secondary roles in most armies in the 1990s and it was completely phased out in 2003 by its successor, the Leopard 2.

In a sea of suburban conformity, stand out with a piece of history that commands attention with this 1976 Leopard 1A5 Battle Tank. Beyond the status symbols that dot the driveways of your neighbors, this tank offers a unique blend of history and power. As you navigate the cul-de-sacs and boulevards, picture the awe of your peers as they witness you roaring proudly through the streets in your tank. Why keep up with the Joneses when you can lead them into a new realm with a mighty tank? Register to bid today.

Speed Read: A garage-built Ducati 996 café racer and more

custom motorcycle news 190 745x497 1

The latest café racers, flat trackers, and electric scooters.
We kick things off with a feel-good story of a botched Ducati 996 custom job, rescued by a talented garage builder. Then we look at a dazzling Yamaha SR500 flat tracker from 20-year-old Moritz Bree, a dustbin-faired Honda Dax from K-Speed, and a BMW CE 04 scooter from Deus ex Machina.

Ducati 996 by Jaron Hall Most people would balk at the idea of customizing a Ducati 996, but Utah-based garage builder Jaron Hall’s work on this 996 is nothing short of noble. That’s because when Jaron got his hands on the 996, it was in dire need of saving.

The Ducati’s previous owner had tried to turn it into a scrambler, so it came to Jaron with no fairings, a hacked subframe, and a smorgasbord of sketchy parts. Working after hours (he has a marketing day job), and taking on the entire build solo, Jaron turned the mongrel 996 into a high-class Italian café racer.
