Custom Kawasaki Zephyr 1100, Honda café racer, Ducati Scrambler and Cake Åik e-bike.
Performance and utility are the words of the week. We kick off with a 1100 cc Kawasaki endurance racer, followed by a farm-built Honda mashup, a street-legal electric utility bike from Cake, and a Ducati Scrambler turned dreamy café racer from Motocrew.

Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 by 72 HKG Performance This Kawasaki café racer project began just like so many before it, with the simple question of “what else ya got?” Jorge and Antonio, the builders behind the Spanish workshop 72 HKG Performance, had taken a small road trip to pick up a project car, when they found this Kawasaki tucked away in the garage, covered with a blanket of unrealized potential.

For those who did their time in the field of liberal arts, Taschen needs no introduction. Its large-format photography, fine arts and architectural books (among other disciplines) have been testing the weight limits of coffee tables since 1983. It has finally turned its attention to collectible motorcycles with its massive, two-volume set entitled Ultimate Collectible Motorcycles. Stick an orchid in that jar of screws, it’s story time.

With extensive help from George Barber, Sammy Miller, Gordon McCall, Paul d’Orleans, Bonhams, and Team Obsolete, Charlotte and Peter Fiell have assembled a well-thought-out collection of 100 of the world’s most extraordinary (and therefore collectible) motorcycles. The criteria for inclusion includes, “engineering and design innovation, functional beauty, raw power, competition histories, exceptional rarity, and inherent desirability.” It’s a subjective exercise, to be sure. Is something actually “collectible” if there’s only one of them? But this is academic nitpicking. Their choices are solidly based in fact. Is anything more objective than money?

While the photography is standard and stunning, the value of this work lies in the words. Extensive research and documentation accompanies each of the 100 examples. The authors’ admitted love for roadracing and competition mean most of the examples saw success at the track or represented a sea change in engineering and/or technology. Their collectibility is equal parts scarcity and story. Great insights abound. About Italian race programs in the 1960s (edited for length):

“…thieving the contents of a factory parts store was a normal modus operandi for the employees. The only team/factory where this did not occur was MV Agusta, because Count Domenico ran a very close shop with only a handful of trusted employees…”

Scandi-ly Clad: NUEN’s neo-futuristic electric motorcycle concept

Electric motorcycle concept by NUEN MOTO
There’s much debate around the aesthetics of electric motorcycles. Should they follow traditional motorcycle design norms, or should they take advantage of their radically different drivetrains to tread new ground? This sharp prototype from NUEN MOTO in Vietnam does both, and we’re here for it.

NUEN MOTO is an electrical motorcycle startup with its roots firmly in the world of design. Co-founder Gia Nguyen first launched NUEN as a design studio, then added an apparel label and a custom motorcycle business. Now, they’re looking to release their first production electric bike.

You’re looking at their first prototype, the NU-E. But it’s not quite the same bike as the one that they’ll eventually be taking to market. The NU-E was built as a proof of concept, and as a test bed to gather rider feedback and make improvements.

“We’re focused on designing and building the sleekest and most innovative electric motorcycles for the Vietnamese and Asian market,” says Gia. “We’re a team of true motorcycle enthusiasts, experienced builders and engineers from Vietnam, Sweden and the USA. We’re really passionate about building a bike that we’d love to ride and be proud of.”

Honda has officially confirmed the return of its PCX scooter for 2023. Now the PCX comes in a new Matte Brown Metallic and is only available as an ABS-equipped model for $4,149. For context, the PCX was available last year in both ABS and non-ABS forms in Pearl White.

This scooter’s last major engine update occurred in 2021, when displacement increased to the current 157cc. For 2023, there are no mechanical updates on the freeway-capable 157cc single or its fully automatic transmission system.

Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) is equipped to improve safety in low traction situations. According to Honda, this system monitors wheel speed and throttle opening, and when slip is detected, the system intervenes by limiting engine torque. It can be turned off as needed.

Suspending the scooter over the rough blacktop is a 31mm telescopic fork with 3.9 inches of travel and dual shocks with 3.7 inches of travel. The 2.1-gallon fuel tank is located under the floorboard for a low center of gravity.

Commuter conveniences include a 1.7-liter front storage compartment with a USB-C socket as well as a massive 30-liter underseat storage space that is claimed to fit a full-face helmet. It comes with a sidestand and centerstand for a small parking footprint.

When it comes to styling there’s the bubbly retro-styled Metropolitan and then there’s the modern and angular PCX. And Honda was sure to be consistent with the sharp details on the latter.

Not only does the engine cover match the scooter’s design lines, but its LED taillight design incorporates an “X” shape to distinguish the PCX. The rest of the LED lights and three-dimensional bezel structure around the LCD display keeps the edgy aesthetic going.

Want to get your hands on the latest PCX? US dealerships will have this vehicle available beginning June 2023.
