SUMMER OF LOVE: Step Back in Time with the Iconic 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle

Written by Nicole Ellan James

Close your eyes and transport yourself to the groovy Summer of Love. It’s 1967, and the air is filled with psychedelic art and the tunes of The Doors and Jimi Hendrix playing in the background. The race to space is on, and folks are protesting the Vietnam War, but amidst it all, the Chevrolet Chevelle is stealing the show, capturing the hearts of every American teen longing for a taste of speed and freedom.

The year 1967 holds a special place in the heart of the Chevrolet Chevelle. Like a rebirth, the model got a major makeover, turning heads with its sleek and muscular design. The designers knew exactly what the cool cats wanted, and they delivered: the curves, the lines, the whole package.

This custom 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle offered with No Reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural New Orleans Auction, September 28-30 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, captures that vibe.

Under the hood of this American muscle car is a mighty GM Performance LSX454 crate engine, packing an almighty 627 horsepower. This bold beauty breathes through a FAST 102 LSXR intake manifold, paired with a 102mm DBW throttle body and a custom stainless-steel intake system. This combination is all about delivering maximum air and fuel to satisfy the need for speed.

The LSX454 is mated to a T56 Super Magnum 6-speed manual transmission, equipped with a Mcleod RXT twin-disc clutch. Yes, we’re talking about precise shifts and lightning-fast acceleration here. To transfer all that power to the rear wheels, a carbon fiber driveshaft is employed, ensuring optimal performance and reduced weight. The driveshaft turns a Ford 9-inch Pro Iron Case TrueTrac posi-traction rear end with a 4.11 gear ratio.

This engine is also suitably dressed to impress. Keeping the engine cool is a Griffin radiator with dual electric fans. Rocking a Holley mid-mount front drive system, it provides an eye-catching visual appeal while maximizing engine performance. And the sound? It’s pure classic rock thanks to the ceramic-coated Ultimate headers and a custom tig-welded X-pipe dual exhaust system.

The 1967 Chevelle is equipped with power-assisted Baer Pro 6-piston front calipers and massive 14-inch rotors up front. The rear brakes boast Baer Pro 4-piston calipers and 13-inch rotors, ensuring balanced and effective braking performance so that when you hit the brakes, you’ll feel the confidence of stopping on a dime. This Chevelle is also equipped with a Roadster Shop stainless-steel brake line kit and an E-Stopp electronic push-button emergency brake.

Now, on to the suspension and handling. The ’67 Chevelle is outfitted with dampening and height-adjustable RS SV by Fox coilovers on all four corners. That means you can fine-tune the suspension to suit your driving style and road conditions. To keep things steady and responsive, the Chevelle features a parallel 4-bar rear suspension. It’s all about maintaining traction and control, providing a solid foundation for those hairpin turns and exhilarating maneuvers. And to ensure precise and effortless control, power rack & pinion steering makes every twist and turn on the road an absolute joy.

This Chevelle rolls on custom-made Forgeline RB3C forged 3-piece concave wheels, captivating the eye with their sleek and distinctive look. And to complement the wheels, the Chevelle has some serious rubber on the road. The front boasts 285/35/19 Toyo Proxes R888R radial tires, while the rear showcases beefy 345/30/19 tires. To accommodate such large rear tires, the Chevelle received an ABC Performance rear mini-tub kit. It’s all about the perfect balance of grip, performance and a touch of attitude.

The Chevelle adorns a deeply pigmented black finish, Mercedes-Benz paint code 040, a color that elevates its presence to a whole new level. This iconic black hue not only accentuates the muscular lines of the Chevelle but also adds an air of timeless allure. To complete the picture, the Chevelle sits on a Roadster Shop SPEC chassis that’s been treated to a Space Gray powder coating.

To keep the driver and its passengers comfortable yet true to the times, the Chevelle is equipped with a Vintage Air system and a RetroSound Bluetooth stereo. The driver can monitor the vehicles vitals with the Dakota Digital RTX gauge cluster.

Other customizations include a smooth firewall along with SpeedTech transmission tunnel and driveshaft tunnel. The vehicle is equipped with an Aeromotive Stealth fuel tank and Billet CVF hood hinges. The build was finished in August 2022 with roughly 1,600 miles since completion.

So, imagine cruising down the open road,
