I’m not sure about you, but the last eighteen months have taught me a lot. I’ve realised that I really don’t like daytime TV, Deliveroo can become boring very quickly and that I do absolutely no exercise aside from the weekly walk around the supermarket. I had no idea where this lack of activity came from, but I knew it had to change.
Thinking back on my twenty-eight years, I’m pretty certain I’ve given most sports a go. I played football for two decades, took road cycling pretty seriously for a while and once even joined a cricket team. But these are non-starters for me now, mainly because I don’t know enough people to start a team with. I was at a loss for what to do, and then it came to me: running. Running’s fun, right? It strengthens muscles, improves your cardiovascular fitness and all you really need is a decent pair of trainers. Finding the right pair, however, is definitely the first hurdle. Running shoes are a science and, if like me, you don’t immediately know what terrain you’re going to run over or which gait type you have, you’re going to be in for a lot of learning.
Now don’t get too excited, I’m no expert on all the technical specifications, but I like to think that by now I can spot a decent pair of runners when I see them.
I’ve rounded up some of the best on the market right now to give you the best support.
Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% – £169.95
You know when a brand describes their products colourway as Hyper Turquoise and Chlorine that you’re onto a winner. Thankfully the wonders of the Air Zoom Tempo don’t stop there. Suitable for casual runners and professionals alike, lightweight and durable with a lovely Zoom Air unit in the footpad to give you that extra spring in every step.
Hoka Clifton 8 – £125
Argue with me if you want, but in my opinion, these are the most aesthetically pleasing shoes in this line-up. HOKA’s award winning Clifton 8 boasts a streamlined silhouette and updated upper made from engineered mesh. Don’t just listen to me (and stats) though, Adam Hicket, HOKA Athlete said, “The perfect balance of cushioning & lightness. Ready for ANYTHING!”
didas 4DFWD – £170
Yes, the sole is mad, but don’t disregard it. It’s based off seventeen years of athletes’ running data. This 3D printed beauty aids in redirecting your energy forward, improving your gait along the way. The Primeknit+ upper allows the breathability comfort you crave on a run.
New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v11s – £135
If you need to upgrade your runner to a more trustworthy pair, then look no further than these from New Balance. Created with comfort at the forefront thanks to its responsive underfoot Fresh Foam, giving you a serious boost with each stride. Adding to this its Ultra Heel tech that hugs the back of your foot, you’re guaranteed a supportive fit.
