THE EVOLUTION OF HYBRIDS: From Fuel Efficiency to High-Performance Powerhouses

Let’s be real … when someone says the word “hybrid” in an automotive context, more often than not the first thing that comes to mind is a Toyota Prius. But not all hybrids were designed to be small, fuel-efficient sedans ‒ some hybrids offer peak performance in addition to stellar fuel efficiency and sustainability.

Hybrids merge the advantages of both electric vehicles and traditional gasoline engines, offering impressive fuel efficiency alongside extended range and convenience. They achieve this by utilizing an electric motor powered by batteries in conjunction with a conventional internal-combustion engine (ICE). Some hybrids, known as Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), have batteries that can be charged through a wall outlet, the engine or regenerative braking.

Regenerative braking, or regen, is the process of capturing electrical energy and storing it in the battery for reuse during acceleration. F1 racing fans might recognize this as the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). When you come to a stop, energy that would otherwise be lost as heat is instead captured and stored in the battery. In a hybrid vehicle, the stored energy helps propel the car from a stoplight, delaying the need for the gasoline engine to restart. This smart energy recycling boosts the vehicle’s efficiency and extends battery life.

Because hybrids use an electric motor alongside an internal combustion engine, modern hybrids come with features like “stealth mode.” Stealth mode allows the driver to navigate quietly through neighborhoods by operating solely on the electric motor at speeds up to 45 miles per hour, or until the throttle activates the gasoline engine. An example of a vehicle with this special feature is the first retail production VIN 001 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray 3LZ, which sold for $1.15 million at Barrett-Jackson’s 2023 Palm Beach Auction, with 100% of the sale price benefiting

Electric motors also deliver instant torque, resulting in impressive acceleration. For instance, the Ferrari SF90, the first-ever Ferrari to feature PHEV architecture, showcases this capability. It combines a twin-turbo V8 engine with three electric motors: two on the front axle and one at the rear between the engine and the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Combined, the total output is 986 horsepower, enabling Ferrari to claim a 0 to 60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds. Recently, a 2022 Ferrari SF90 Spider sold at Barrett-Jackson’s 2024 Palm Beach Auction for $1.1 million, demonstrating the allure of this hybrid.

It’s impossible to discuss the marvels of today’s hybrid cars without mentioning the holy trinity: the McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari.

One of the most potent production cars ever made, the McLaren P1, stands out as one of the earliest plug-in hybrid supercars. At the Barrett-Jackson 2021 Las Vegas Auction, Deadmau5’s 2015 P1 sold for $1,567,500. Powered by a 3.8-liter DOHC engine that generates 727 peak horsepower at 7,300 rpm, the P1 also features a unique single electric motor designed to eliminate turbo lag during hard acceleration. This electric motor adds 176 horsepower, bringing the P1’s total output to an astonishing 903 horsepower. The car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and reach 120 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The Porsche 918 Spyder was equipped with a new generation of regenerative braking that vastly improved existing capabilities, as seen on the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder that sold for $1.76 million at the 2018 Las Vegas Auction. It derives power from a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8, mated to two electric motors. With all three power plants working together, the 918 Spyder produces 887hp and over 900 ft/lbs of torque. The 918 also lapped the Nürburgring at a record-breaking 6 minutes, 57 seconds at an average speed of 111.54 mph ‒ and it did all this while still maintaining the carbon emissions of a normal road car.

The Ferrari LaFerrari is another street-legal production supercar inspired by Formula One. It uses race-proven hybrid technology from its Formula One program like the KERS system. It combines a 6.3-litre V12 engine with an electric motor for a combined 949hp and 664 ft/lbs of torque. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle can reach 60 mph in under 3 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 217 mph. LaFerrari fans will have the opportunity to see Sammy Hagar’s one-of-one custom 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block during the 2024 Scottsdale Fall Auction, October 10-13 at WestWorld

Speed Read: A garage-built Ducati 996 café racer and more

custom motorcycle news 190 745x497 1

The latest café racers, flat trackers, and electric scooters.
We kick things off with a feel-good story of a botched Ducati 996 custom job, rescued by a talented garage builder. Then we look at a dazzling Yamaha SR500 flat tracker from 20-year-old Moritz Bree, a dustbin-faired Honda Dax from K-Speed, and a BMW CE 04 scooter from Deus ex Machina.

Ducati 996 by Jaron Hall Most people would balk at the idea of customizing a Ducati 996, but Utah-based garage builder Jaron Hall’s work on this 996 is nothing short of noble. That’s because when Jaron got his hands on the 996, it was in dire need of saving.

The Ducati’s previous owner had tried to turn it into a scrambler, so it came to Jaron with no fairings, a hacked subframe, and a smorgasbord of sketchy parts. Working after hours (he has a marketing day job), and taking on the entire build solo, Jaron turned the mongrel 996 into a high-class Italian café racer.
